A Chinese proverb once saying, ‘Rich man can not live without money, poor man can not live without education’. It manifests the importance of education for the poverty. Unfortunately, many typical Chinese families do not seem to understand the proverb. They are willing to give up their children’s education merely for family tradition. It carries a linkage from generation to generation which inherited as a belief in one family. The embedded belief leads parent to believe that their children are not falling under the category of ‘scholar’, and thus, are born not able to study well. This belief is rather making no sense at all. This belief must not be carried down to the next generation as it carries a greater impact on the new generation, forming a new perception to education.
How it happens…
Great grand parent was illiterate, thus educating the grandparent to work their life as labour, subconsciously imparting the belief that education is a ‘can-do-without’. The belief carries down to the parent, and then to the children. The parents will then embrace an indifferent attitude toward their children education, believing that family business can earn more than what they get from education……
