Prince: It is so Tempting!

First of all, I have finally shifted to Kelana Jaya. Second of all,I received a call from my previous company in the afternoon; they are offering me a far better deal to get me back - 50% higher than my previous earning. It is so tempting but since I have decided to try other industry, I have got to turn it down. (For god sake, I can’t stop thinking about the pay $!)…feeling like….a waste….or am I being greedy…I keep telling myself not to think about it, and not to be tempted by the high pay! I think I will get over it after a few days…

Okay, here it goes like that.

I have to shift because my housemate is moving to ‘Puchong’ in early ‘May’; and I consider that area quite a bit distance to any place in town. Hence I started looking around, and I found out that my brother; who stayed in Kelana Jaya, has an empty middle-room for rent.

I plan to move out but indecisive of where to move to; because my next destination must near my office. Thus, last week, I told my brother that I will give him the answer after Monday’s Interview.

On Monday Morning, I did not know what the hell wrong with me; I started packing my stuff in as if I have decided to move to Kelana Jaya!- as if I am sure got the job at Phileo Damansara.

I went for the interview at Phileo Damansara on Monday afternoon. The interview was arranged by Michele, the recruitment consultant from Jen International Executive Search. When I arrived at Phileo Damansara, I received a call from another ‘University College’. They are offering me Senior PR Executive position and a 30% increment from my previous pay. That, I thought, is a good catch! - Only if I am willing to get back to Education industry! However, I decided to give my answer the next day morning- of course, as a last resort - if the interview didn’t work-out!

I walked into the meeting room confidently (I don’t know why; as if I am going to get the job!) The Japanese Manager shot me many questions but I managed to handle it well. Lastly, he told me that he was concerned about my ability in data analysis since my past experiences are in PR & Marketing which did not deal much with data-mining work. The interview took about one and half hours; and I thought I won’t succeed. I thought I have lost my hope again; but I saw a glimp of light when I received a call from Michele.

‘Hi, Steven, you have got the job’, said Michele.

For God sake! I really can’t believe that I have finally got myself into MNC (Multinational Company)! That is my dream since 3 years back when everybody is talking about how good a MNC treating their employees.

The appointment letter will be ready on 27th April 2007, the company is UniCham (if I got it correctly); it is a Japanese FMCG company. I was offered a marketing executive position.

After one year in Advertising industry and two years in Education industry; I have had enough with it. When I decided to get-out of it, I thought it would be difficult; and I have prepared for a pay-cut. Eventually, everything seems to go well.

The reason why I have to turn down the previous-few offers-
1.Title means nothing if you are earning only an executive pay! They can give you great title, such as Asst. Brand Manager or whatsoever but pay you an executive salary. For me, it is such a despised; are they pity me or what?

2.The industry itself does not practice the culture of ‘promotion’, ‘increment’ and ‘bonus’. Although, some industry leaders do give-out such good benefits but in partial to certain employees; which we call it favouritism. I don’t want to put myself in a situation where I am getting high pay without ‘promotion’, ‘increment’ and ‘bonus’ for the rest of my life with the career.

3.The industry started to hire employees under contract; one of the well-known private colleges utilizes it as an easy way to get rid of employees. They change their middle-management (Senior Executives, Asst. Managers and Managers) once in 6 months! The turn over rate is extremely high until now. That is what scares me a lot because it gives me NO job security.

4.The industry is stagnant because they do not practice ‘change’; probably being affected by the nature of the education industry itself which utilises a more conservative approach in their management. Thus, they practically avoid ‘ideas’, and they do not really encourage ideas.

Prince: 'Used-To-Be' Friend!

I used to have an old-school-mate who happened to be my best friend, but I decided to break-off my friendship with him 4 years ago. I dislike his character of indeterminate, and dependency. He likes to share the success of others but unwilling to give-out his effort. Still remember the phrase that he used to tell us, and make us promise him.

‘Please remember me when you are rich; do make me your partner at that time okay?’

He used to do that to everyone one of us, and I truly sick of this type of people (Sorry to say that!).

A few days ago, I got a call from one of my best pal. We had a chat, and I was told about him.

He has broken up with his girlfriend for an 18 years-old Indonesian Chinese girl which he knew through web-cam. He treated his girlfriend as if transparent! Very often, he flirted with this Indonesia lady on the cam; right in front of his girlfriend. It is even absurd since he hasn’t even met this girl before; I mean in real life! Well, I do not personally deny internet relationship but the intention must be right!

What I last heard is that this Indonesian girl is from a wealthy family; her father owns a factory in her homeland. Her father decided to hand the factory over to her ‘future-husband-to-be’, whoever it is- must be born in the year of ‘Monkey’ because of his superstitious belief.

Her father forced her to break-up with his ex-boyfriend due to this superstitious belief. And, by some twist of luck, this ‘used-to-be’ friend of mine, met up with her on the internet and he was born in year of ‘Monkey’, thus, make him fit the criteria. He was so happy; on the other hand, his girlfriend was furious! Thus, they had argument, and eventually broke-up.

From what I know, his girlfriend is a direct-sale person, and had registered an account under his name and had forked out 30k for the business. She had worked hard for the business, but the commission was paid under ‘his’ name, and now, they have broke-up. You know what I mean……

Anyway, I dislike ‘people who like to make-use of other people’, who prey on people’s effort for own advantage…

Prince: Always have to risk...

Still remember 3 years ago; after my degree graduation, I took the offer as a business development executive in one of the small IT Company. I was put responsible for e-marketing and selling of IT products. Unfortunately, I left the job after two months, because I don’t find myself any future in selling IT products. I joined another small advertising company handling account servicing, and was doing quite well then. But at the end of the day, I found my job scope was confined, and all that I have learned was only ‘sell!’

It took me sometimes to think, and I decided that I should try something which I can learn some skills. By some twist of luck, I was recommended by one of my friend for the position as a PR executive. I took the risk to accept the PR job, which pays me 30% lower than my sales job. Life was a bit tight due to my personal financial commitment, but I managed to get through it. It took me two years to learn about PR and event management; and eventually, I thought I was at the right track.

Spending two years in Education industry is more than enough for me, and I really want something special and different, fast changing and allows me to learn and advance myself further.
I believe at some point of time, the private education industry will soon become part of ‘perfect-competition’ where everybody will be selling homogeneous product. I started to find myself become stagnant too. Thus, I have decided to take the risk to try-out other industry, and one industry which has caught my attention a year back is ‘FMCG’.

Today, I turned down the offer as an Assistant Brand Manager from one of the reputable University College in Malaysia, and thereon my future becomes dark and unpredictable again. I am a bit worry if I can get myself into my dream job, but I keep telling myself that I will be fine soon.

Yesterday, I got a call from Jen International again. The lady in charge is Michelle. She asked if I am keen for a marketing executive position which offered by one of the FMCG, but the salary offered may not be what I expected. My immediate response was ‘Yes’. She manages to secure an interview for me on Monday 2pm, and I wish myself luck this time…

Prince: Character Determines Your Future...!

My future worries me. Perhaps, that is the reason I constantly seek for ideas to improvise myself in so I can advance myself further for a better future. More crucially, I want to prove to my family members that I was not born with my destiny; my destiny is in my own hand. I still remember when my mother used to tell me that I do not have the academic aptitude. She told me it is my fate, and I have to live with it. I neither hate my parent nor preferably refrain seeing them, but I learn not to succumb to fate. I learn not to believe in it, but to change it even if it is destined! I convince myself that I can change my life, and I keep telling myself that I will create miracle to prove that my fate is not predestined.

I have been through a tough time in my diploma study due to my poor academic background in secondary school but I did not give up. As Vince Lombardi once said, ‘The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.’ Eventually, I have made it to my Master Study, and will soon be doing my PhD. Though, they have never thought I could make it that far for my study but they are still proud of me.

After my MBA graduation, I shared my vision with my mother. I told her about my business idea, my future and what I plan to do next. I told her that I do not want to work for people for the rest of my life. I deciphered the theory about, ‘employers determine your value’, and I expressed my concern for my future. She finally understood, but she whispered to me that I was born to ‘work for people’; she said that I can excel by working for people, but I do not have the fate to become a ‘boss’.

‘You will fail because people will cheat you’, she whispered.

I told her nothing is absolute; nothing is impossible, and I am willing to change my life for it, and I will never give up trying; at least, I try. I still remember Muhammad Ali once said, ‘Inside of a ring or out, it is nothing wrong with going down but it is wrong to stay down.’ and so I will never stay down.

I have also learn that ‘character destines your future’, and leaders are those who posses certain characters for success, and they are not born with their destiny. It doesn’t matter how hard it would be, but I know if I do not get what I want; I will keep trying as long as I am able to; because I know I haven’t fail; I just haven’t found the right business opportunity that works. Just like Albert Einstein once said, ‘I haven't failed; I just found 100,000 ways that don't work.’
