MORE than 70% of professional women in Malaysia remained unmarried because they were not ready to abandon their careers for a family life, Utusan Malaysia said. Most of them were in their 30s and 40s.
“Why should they abandon their career? That would make man looks selfish at the end of the day” - Prince
Quoting Universiti Malaya’s family development centre director Prof Dr Abdul Rahim Abd Rashid, the paper said if this phenomenon was not checked it could ruin the family institution.
Professionals were identified as those who specialized in their chosen fields, had a high status in society, and were in decision-making positions.
Dr Abdul Rahim said the shortage of men who measured up to the women’s status, and men’s chauvinistic attitudes, were among reasons why these women chose to remain single.
“It is quite true that man is chauvinistic, but they need to make effort to reform because being chauvinistic means autocratic, and we are practicing democratic in Malaysia!” - Prince
He also said men in professional positions were not keen to marry professional women as they had a negative perception towards such women.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover, and sometimes it depends on how a man should try to compromise and synchronize the thought, making people love you is difficult, but making people understand you is even tougher!” – Prince
Asked if he was worried that women might not like what he had to say about them, Dr Abdul Rahim replied: “This is the reality, and it gives an indication of where the professional women of this country are heading towards.”
