After the busy recruitment campaign in December 2005, he thought he can have a rest while waiting for the New Year to arrive. Of course, for the white collar worker, bonus will be their most expected present to celebrate their new year. Obviously, for him, It also marks the end of year 2005, for the effort he has spent for his company.
Today, his CEO came for a meeting, individually with each of the marketing staffs. He thought it will be his performance appraisal meeting after all. Feeling a bit creepy, he walked into the office, greeting to the CEO.
He was asked by his CEO, “Have you found a job recently?”
Of course, the question caught him with surprise, and he can smell something fishy. He answered, “I have never thought of it before, why asking?”
His CEO insisted that he is looking for a job and has found a job, tentatively, wishing him luck if he has found one, or otherwise, hopefully he will get one. His CEO continued saying that, he is not suitable for his current job and that, and they want him to tender his own resignation letter as to reduce headcount in the company.
There are a few reasons was given without justification, and without much explanation, furthermore, they do not want to listen to his explanation as well. The CEO said that he has made his analysis, and it is good for him to leave. No further explanation needed.
The decision struck him, and it led him into believing the meaning of one Chinese proverb “once they cross the river, they destroy the bridge”.
The CEO offered him 3 choices:-
1st– either he finds a job and resign
2nd – The CEO has another newly set-up MLM company, offering two different positions; Sales Executive and Marketing Executives.
“Sale Executive can earn you a lot of money; you can recruit a lot of down line and sell the product” The CEO describes.
“As for Marketing Executive, will have to help me develop the PR function and organizing event, it is a taxing job where you almost have to work until 10pm every day”, the CEO continued.
“It is true, they have to work until 9pm to 10pm almost every night” the Manager emphasized.
The CEO added on saying that “But the pay may be lower than here”.
It took him one night and one day to consider the offer, and look into the few reasons the CEO has given. The few reasons were as below:-
“The principal said she can’t work with you, and I (the CEO) need someone who can work with my partner (the principal)”
- What kind of reason is this? From the past few months he has been trying hard to work closely with his principal, but was always being referred to her husband (one of the director in the company). She simply doesn’t want to deal with him. Somehow, he tried to explain but was turned down by the CEO, the CEO said “I trust my partner, and I have done my analysis”.
“Reducing Headcount”
– It could be a good reason to lay off workers after the hectic month of recruitment? He has been working hard with the team to achieve the target, now he can afford such a reason after everything has been settled down? Our target is 280 children, and we are hitting 263 children – 17 away from the number is not amounted to lying off and streamline the operation as he believes. If so, all the marketing staffs will have to be responsible for that, moreover, he is only the Vice Chairperson for the recruitment campaign! What about the Chair person?
“Performance not up to his expectation”
– The Company doesn’t even have a proper HR policy, and NO evaluation is done on him, in what basis he made his comment on his performance? The fact that the CEO only has weekly meeting with them, somehow, The CEO hasn’t been meeting them for almost a month. In what basis he made his comment?
The Offers:-
Sale Executive – He has no interest in MLM business at all!
Marketing Executive – He doesn’t mind working late at night as long as there is a career advancement opportunity, but he can’t believe they said the pay is lower. Where is the sincerity?
At the end he can conclude that, it is simply an ‘offer’ to urge him to go faster. They can even ask him to tender self-resignation letter, and want him to leave before Chinese New Year. He was told to tender one month notice and written in the letter as if he wants it to be one month so that the CEO can sign it. How stupid could that be? Of course NO WAY!
